On Wednesday, March 12, we welcomed Dr Tania Read and Dr Lin Ma for our International Women’s Day webinar, hosted by Dr Sofia Marchesini. The discussion explored their career paths, professional journeys, and contributions to STEM and Materials Science.

During the webinar, we engaged our audience with live polls on challenges faced by women in STEM, valuable forms of support, and strategies for maintaining work-life balance. Their responses enriched our panel’s discussion, sparking further insightful conversations. This webinar was not recorded.

 

About the speakers

Dr Tania Read, Assistant Professor, University of Warwick

Tania ReadDr Tania Read is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry within the Warwick Electrochemistry and Interfaces Group, and Platform Manager for the Xray-Computed Tomography Research Technology Platform (XCT RTP) at the University of Warwick. An analytical chemist with training in a wide range of techniques, her career has developed with a focus on electroanalytical sensors for applications ranging from environmental waters to biomedical applications, gaining experience on both sides of academic-industry collaborations. In particular, Dr Reid’s research currently focuses on the development of electrochemical sensors for point-of-care analysis of key health markers, including blood gases. Her recent venture into research platform management takes full advantage of her analytical, project lead, lab management, and cross-sector collaboration experience in a relatively new format for careers in academic research institutions.

 

Dr Lin Ma, Senior Lecturer, The University of Manchester

Dr Lin Ma is a Senior Lecturer in Chemical Engineering, a Co-Investigator with ICAM, and Principal Investigator on multiple UKRI and industrial projects at The University of Manchester. Dr Ma specialises in multi-scale imaging and characterisation of rocks, focusing on digital rock analysis in geoenergy reservoirs and subsurface energy storage for sustainable energy development. She is also the Faculty Head of International for Student Recruitment and the Academic Lead/co-Chair of the EDI Women@Manchester Staff network, and holds external roles as Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Marine and Petroleum Geology and Vice Chair of The Geological Society’s Energy Group.
