Material Systems

Our Work

The Materials Systems focus area at ICAM is improving our understanding of the properties inherent in materials, such as toughness and ductility. This focus area is also looking at the implications of any modifications, such as surface engineering, self-healing coatings and composites, and joining, on the performance of a material when operating in different environments.

The energy industry is interested in understanding the ways in which both new and existing materials operate within and respond to demanding environments. This requires a systems approach that takes into account both the conditions they operate under and the way in which they are joined, surface engineered and coated.

Improving knowledge in this area can optimise the structural use of materials, making replacement less frequent and driving down the overall resource and carbon cost.
